(20080906)

Hopefully LHC will be switched on on the coming Wednesday. Some said that there is a certain probability that the machine will bring the universe to an end; while the others said that there is no point to worry, as similar events have occured for 100000000000000000000000 times (which means 5000000 times per second), and nothing happened.

Practically the LHC is not a doomsday machine. Perhaps in the future, universe-killing machines will be invented for inter-universe warfare. Such machines can also be used in suicidal attack to bring a complete end for both parties. We can simply feel safe for a while, since most probably such machines have not been invented, or they are used already, judging from the invasive nature of organisms.

Maybe it is a happy end for the universe to end in this way. No one would feel sorry for the universe.
(well, it reminds me the end of "Mostly Harmless--the 5th volume of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Triology")

It is still not a pity if the LHC fails to kill the world. We like committing suicide. There are still a lot of chances.

Curiosity killed the cat.

Maybe one day we will observe a novel explosion in a remote, unfashionable galaxy, which can only be the result of a planet being blown up by a particle accelerator. That day will be remembered for the discovery of an extraterrestial civilization which advertise itself through self destruction.
